Growing Lion's Mane (Hericium) at home – instructions for your myco-bag
1) Unpacking & Placement: Open the packaging and place the substrate block, along with the foil, in a bright but not sunny location with good ventilation. Suitable locations include the kitchen or living room at temperatures between 15 and 24 °C. Mushrooms grow towards the light – a bright location ensures even growth.
2) Cut the foil: Make one or more crosswise cuts in the foil, each about 5–10 cm long. The fruiting bodies will later grow out of these openings. The foil edges do not need to be removed or folded back.
3) Moistening: Spray the cuts and the surface of the foil daily with fresh, clean water. The substrate should always be evenly moist, but not soggy. A standard spray bottle is best suited for this.
4) Care & Observation: Keep the moisture level constant and regularly check for the formation of small white fungal growths at the cut surfaces. The first lion's mane mushrooms usually appear after about 7–14 days.
5) Harvesting: Once the fruiting bodies have grown well and the typical "spines" are clearly developed, you can harvest the lion's mane mushroom. Carefully cut it off with a clean, sharp knife or twist it off directly from the substrate. Don't wait too long, as the mushroom can dry out.
6) Further harvests: After the first harvest, the substrate needs a short rest period of a few days. Keep it moist – often one or two more harvests follow.
7) Dispose of the substrate: Once no further mushroom growth is visible, you can dispose of the used substrate in your organic waste bin or compost. It is also well-suited as a natural fertilizer for balcony and garden plants.
Note: When tending and harvesting, work as cleanly as possible and wash your hands beforehand. Consistent moisture and good air circulation help prevent mold growth.
